TooMuchWifi slashes prices to make internet connectivity more accessible to customers living in under-resourced communities

22 November 2022, Cape TownLeading Internet Service Provider (ISP) and Air Fibre technology leader in low-income residential areas, TooMuchWifi, has announced it will be cutting prices by up to 43% from next month in response to the rising cost of living and negative socio-economic impact to its approximately 400 000 strong customer base living in 35 under-resourced communities in the Cape Province.

TooMuchWifi’s discounted offering comes as an early Christmas gift for new and existing customers and will be implemented automatically, from 1 December, without customers having to contact the company to request the lower fees. Existing customers will benefit from lowered monthly billing costs, which have the potential to translate into R300+ savings on monthly costs; while new customers signing up for Uncapped Lines on or before 31 December 2022 will enjoy the added benefit of a free installation.

The company, which entered the market in 2016 with a nation-building agenda to establish a low-cost internet infrastructure in low-income neighbourhoods, made the announcement after its recent sale of a 24,85% stake in the business to the Mineworkers Investment Company (MIC).

Says CEO and Co-Founder of TooMuchWifi, Ian Thomson “We’re thrilled to make this announcement based on our recent partnership with MIC. Their stake in the business represents a sizeable injection of capital into the business that enables us to advance our mission to lower prices, expand our national network footprint, and provide affordable connectivity to more low-income earners living in at-risk communities, who have traditionally been locked out of the formal economy due to a lack of infrastructure support and relatively high costs of data.“

MIC Impact Investment Manager, Thato Ntseare, comments, “MIC is committed to investing in businesses that will propel South Africa forward, and as such, we’re excited with the potential that this collaboration represents to significantly improve the accessibility of individuals living in under-resourced communities to affordable data, and the catalytic role that that can play in driving economic growth. MIC is an organisation that is rooted in the country we serve, and with every investment it’s important for us to ensure a positive impact.”

All customers can now choose from three uncapped lines:
BASIC Uncapped 5Mbps for R295pm;
STANDARD Uncapped 10Mbps for R345pm; and
PREMIUM Uncapped 20Mbps for R395pm.
The company also offers connectivity on-the-go at its public hotspots in the communities it serves, via data bundles from as little as R5.

In contrast to most internet providers, TooMuchWifi boasts more than 99% network uptime, even during load shedding and doesn’t require contracts but offers its customer’s month-to-month plans that don’t incur any cancellation, connection, or reconnection costs.

Thomson believes that with the company’s price drop, TooMuchWifi empowers communities by offering exceptional quality and service at a low price. “We offer some of the most competitive pre-paid connectivity rates in the market and comparatively deliver at least 20 times more value than standard data packages being sold by other mobile network operators. This, combined with contact centre agents that are available 365 days a year, means that customers and communities have access to a platform of unparalleled internet and service support that facilitates access to the formal economy, and overcomes many of the barriers to entry that keep people disempowered and disconnected,” he concludes.

All Uncapped Lines are unlimited and unthrottled without any Fair Use Policy limitations, providing customers consistent high speed internet connectivity throughout the month. TooMuchWifi’s lines are symmetrical with equal upload and download speeds of 5/5Mbps, 10/10Mbps and 20/20Mbps compared to competitors that offer asymmetrical lines with lower upload speeds.

The TooMuchWifi Contact Centre can be contacted via phone, email, website chat and WhatsApp between 08h00 and 20h00 from Mondays to Saturdays, and between 09h00 and 17h00 on Sundays. Customer support contact (060) 016 9434.
